I started out using ignite arrow + dual shot, another bow attack (doesn't really matter...Hunters/Pentrating attack are better than Power Shot), Troll Ungent, and a dodge/block stance. That left me a few skill slots open to experiment with either other ranger skills, or my secondary skills. It works really nice in the beginning. By the time you need something else, you should be able to cap barrage.

Aye, ignite arrows with dual shot works great for starting out with a ranger. Both are skills you get early on and do a good amount of dmg. If you ever do PvP, here's a build I tend to have a lot of success with. It's flexible so it works well in all types of PvP.
If you have ele secondary try getting conjure fire or conjure air to use with a firey or shocking bow to add to the above combo for extra dmg. If you are monk secondary, bring judges insight. If necro secondary, bring order of pain. As for mesmer and warrior secondary, other experimentations might work well, but I can't think of any atm.
Att as equal as possible in expertise, marksmanship, and wilderness survival.
- I tend to use a sup marks rune and a major expertise with a good vigor rune of course
Distracting shot (or Punishing shot {E})
Savage Shot
Penetratng shot (or Hunter's shot if you want to cause bleeding)
Pin Down (or Crippling Shot {E} - what I prefer)
Apply Poison
Dodge (or Storm chaser/other running skill)
Troll Unguent
Rez Sig
This build I find works well to give a good amount of flexibility between dmg, interupt and condition while still being able to get away and heal when necessary (crippling shot + dodge + troll ftw).

Well if you do want to go warrior, Id suggest going melee, because its a lot more fun then just sitting in the back and shooting at people, IMO. Here's a build that has worked wonders for me:
Apply Poison
Seeking Blade / Swift Chop / Irresistable Blow
Sever Artery / Cleave / Devastating Hammer
Gash / Cyclone Axe / Counter Blow
Tiger's Fury
Lightning Reflexes / Whirling Defense
Troll Unguent
Revive signet
This seems like the most balance format for a melee R/W to me. I recommend the axe, but they each have their own pros.
If you want to do some ass kickin in the front, I suggest this build.

i met this guy in PvP; his build pooned everything
R/W
Irresistible blow (spam it till the world ends)
Heavy Blow
Crushing Blow (if they get knocked down)
Mighty Blow
Counter Blow
Devastating Hammer {Elite} / "Victory Is Mine!" {Elite}
Tiger's Fury
Ressurection Signet
I'll test it later this week
I watched the guy use it: 50-100 dmg per hit while he used skills
~34 dmg without skills ~54 dmg with crit
high expertise to lower mana costs

For some reason I doubt your term, "solo".

Am I missing something? If you want to go melee, why go R/W instead or W/R? I know the max energy and energy regen is a little less, but I've generally found very little energy problems when using a warrior. The only other reason I could think of is the use of runes, but with the lesser armor that a ranger has as it is, a major/sup rune probably wouldn't suit well imho. Most of these builds also seem to be based largely on ranger skills. I guess I can understand wanting to have expertise available for lightning reflexes, but it seems like there are better ways to solve that problem that don't involve sacrificing armor.

I'm not getting the logic either. Right now, I have a R/Mo, but I can change if there's a real advantage to having R/W instead. Background: I use her for PvE, not PvP. I'd like to take her solo farming, but didn't think R/W had the skills to solo. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Not asking to be flamed, but educated. I've got no problem switching her skills around.

I actually found the most useful secondary for PvE for myself was Ele, since I could always use Conjure Flame with a fiery bow (or Conjure Lightning with a shocking bow) to do an extra amount of dmg per shot. Currently, however I am R/Me since I occaisionally go as a trapper (in both PvE and PvP) and use Mantra of Resolve to prevent interupts.

Reason I use a R/W for melee (at least in PvP) is for a Thumper. Tigers fury makes you attack much quicker with a hammer (consequently dealing more damage) and you can spam energy skills cause of high expertise (works for weapon skills).
I also like playing a R/N touch ranger. You can use necro skills (not spells) without ever really having to worry about energy.
